A Red Onion is a popular variety of onion easily distinguished by its vibrant, papery outer skin, which can range from a deep purple to a reddish-pink hue. Beneath the skin, its concentric layers are also tinged with purple, often with white rings in between.
Compared to yellow or white onions, red onions are generally considered to have a milder, sweeter, and slightly less pungent flavor, especially when eaten raw. This makes them a favorite for use in salads, salsas, sandwiches, and as a garnish where their color and crisp texture can be appreciated. When cooked, their sweetness intensifies, and their color can soften.
They are known for their distinct aroma and are a fundamental aromatic ingredient in many cuisines around the world, including those in Malaysia.
